Boss BV9995B 7-Inch In-Dash Motorized Widescreen Touchscreen TFT Monitor/DVD/MP3/CD Combo Receiver with Built-in Bluetooth Review

At first Boss BV9995B looked like perfect combo receiver for my car. It has plethora of features and is from Boss, from which I expect nothing but perfection. The actual impression is that this is only one below average
device.

Boss BV9995B installation was easy enough. In no time, everyone can make it work. The first thing that you will notice is the size of fully mechanized 7 inch TFT display. Resolution and picture clarity are great. LCD can be tilted in three different positions, so there should be no problems with viewing items on the screen. There is, however, a problem with viewing the screen during sunny days: maximum brightness setting is easily overpowered by bright sunlight.

Boss BV9995B can read audio and video data from various inputs. For starters, there is an USB socket. It detects data without any problem. One issue with this input, is that during long movie playbacks, picture on the screen starts to skip. I guess that the reason for that is overheating, as I usually noticed this phenomenon during hot days, and because cooling fan can become very loud, which means that there is not enough airflow to dissipate the accumulated heat.

SD card reader is also present, but its performance is suboptimal. It takes more then few minutes to detect all songs on the SD card. This can be mitigated by using smaller capacity or high speed SD card, such as Sandisk Ultra.

Bluetooth connection is very bad. I had no luck trying to stream Internet content via Bluetooth connection with my mobile phone. I don’t think that there is a problem with my mobile phone as this set up worked with other devices flawlessly.

There is also a 3.5″ input in the front that can be used to connect MP3 players. I haven’t used this capability, as I have found other input options more suitable for my needs. Never the less, it is nice to have it as a backup, if everything other fails.

Boss BV9995B also comes with a small remote controller that has one annoying characteristic: it has to be pointed directly at the IR sensor to work.

Overall, Boss BV9995B is a good device, but I think there are better solution on the market for that amount of money.

  • The Bluetooth: Drops out all the time, listening to Pandora or other streaming radio through the cell phone impossible. The sound quality with the included microphone is mediocre at best. Have not tried to pair the Bluetooth with a laptop or a device with a more powerful Bluetooth signal than a cell phone, but again, I don’t plan on using a laptop while driving. Hence, the Bluetooth is worthless in my opinion.
  • For some reason, after few hours of continuous watching, the movies running off the USB start ’skipping’, which can get very obnoxious. Thankfully, this only happens occasionally, and it may have something to do with overheating of components while driving in a hot summer day, even though the device has a cooling fan in the back.
  • In addition to the $25 for the wire harness, a $15 antenna harness is required ($40 at worstbuy; I was quoted $60+ elsewhere). The radio is not HD/digital and the reception quality is noticingly worse than my stock stereo.
  • The SD card input is very slow, taking 1-2 minutes to “load up” the list of songs on a 4GB card. The recognition is much faster with a high quality SD card with smaller capacity (i.e. 2GB Sandisk ultra/extreme).
  • The cooling fan can be loud, and the LCD brightness is not adequate for bright, sunny days. The movies are still watchable with the screen tilted down, but much is washed out.
  • The remote must be directly pointed at the IR sensor to work, and the layout is not very user friendly / intuitive

Conclusion

Overall, it’s far from a perfect device, but comparing its price to some bigger names (which I’m guessing are no better in addressing the issues I mentioned earlier), and the amount of joy it provides on loooong cross-country drives, this system is well worth it.
